Glacial vs placer geology in Canada

Ice sheets bulldozed most of this country’s ancient placers into oblivion. Where they didn’t — and where rivers have rebuilt them since — is the map of Canadian panning.

A placer needs time

A placer is a concentration of heavy minerals sorted by moving water. It takes a gold source — quartz veins in the bedrock, or an older placer — and a river with enough time to erode the source, carry the gold and drop it in the traps described in Where gold sits. Rich placers like the Klondike’s took millions of years of a river cutting into gold-bearing rock while the climate stayed mild enough for the river to keep running.

That is the problem with Canada. Within the last two and a half million years — the Pleistocene — continental ice sheets covered almost the entire country, repeatedly. Ice does not sort. It scrapes valleys to bedrock, mixes gold with everything else into an unsorted mess called till, and dumps the lot somewhere downstream of where it started. Where the ice went, the ancient placers went with it.

The unglaciated exception: Klondike

Parts of central Yukon were never covered by the ice sheets — they were too dry for glaciers to build, part of the ice-free corridor geologists call Beringia. The Klondike creeks around Dawson kept their pre-glacial placers intact: the famous White Channel gravels on the benches above Bonanza and Hunker creeks are ancient river deposits several million years old, and the creek-bottom gravels below them were enriched by the modern streams reworking that older gold. That is why the 1896 rush found nuggets by the pound in places, and why Yukon gold still runs coarse by Canadian standards. It is the reason Free Claim No. 6 on Bonanza gives visitors pickers a century and a quarter after discovery.

B.C.: partly buried, partly reworked

British Columbia was glaciated, but the Cordilleran ice was mountain ice — thinner, channelled by valleys — and it left more behind. The Cariboo’s legendary deep leads at Barkerville were pre-glacial bedrock channels buried under till and rebuilt after the ice retreated; the Fraser’s bars from Hope to Lillooet are post-glacial placers, built by a big river reworking enormous volumes of glacial sediment that already carried fine gold from the interior. Tulameen, the Similkameen, Wild Horse and the Atlin creeks each tell a version of the same story: a gold source in the hills, glacial debris in the valley, and a modern stream sorting the debris into new placers. The gold is finer than Yukon’s, but there is a lot of it, and it is renewed every freshet.

The shield and the prairies: flour gold country

East of the Rockies, glaciation was total. Ontario and Quebec are hard-rock gold country — the greenstone belts of Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Red Lake and the Abitibi hold some of the world’s great lode mines — but their placers were scraped away and scattered as glacial dispersal trains. What a panner finds in northern Ontario rivers is fine flour gold liberated from till, plus the occasional flake where a stream crosses a mineralized zone. Quebec’s Beauce is the eastern exception: the Chaudière valley’s deep, weathered gravels survived well enough to give Canada its first gold rush in 1846 and still produce coarse gold near the Gilbert.

Alberta and Saskatchewan have no significant bedrock gold sources of their own; their gold came east with the ice and with rivers draining the mountains, ground to flour on the way. The North Saskatchewan concentrates it on point bars, hundreds of specks to a gram. Nova Scotia is different again: Meguma slate-belt quartz veins shed gold directly into short streams and onto beaches, so its placers — like the sands at The Ovens — are young, local and fine.

Using glacial geology instead of fighting it

Prospectors in glaciated terrain work backwards up the ice flow. A train of gold-bearing boulders or a belt of anomalous till points up-ice toward a source, and provincial surveys publish till geochemistry for exactly this purpose. For the panner the practical lessons are simpler:

  • In glaciated country, sample where a modern river has had the longest time to sort till: big rivers, long reaches, inside bends below gradient breaks.
  • Expect fine gold and finish your pan carefully — snuffer, not fingers.
  • Where bedrock shows in a modern channel, the post-glacial trap is fresh and un-worked; clean it.
  • Coarse gold means an unglaciated or lightly glaciated source close by. It happens in the Klondike, the Cariboo and the Beauce, and almost nowhere else in Canada.
