Is recreational panning legal here?

Yes — panning with a gold pan needs no licence at all. Alberta is one of the easiest provinces for casual panning: on the beds and shores of most rivers (which are Crown land), you may pan with a hand pan without any licence, and you keep what you find. Recover more than one troy ounce (about 31 g) in a year and Crown royalties apply.

Step up to a sluice box or rocker and you need a recreational placer mining licence — one per person, hand-fed and hand-powered equipment only. Anything motorized is commercial territory under the province's metallic and industrial minerals rules and the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER).

Where you can go

  • North Saskatchewan River — the classic. Fine flour gold from the mountains settles on point bars through Rocky Mountain House, Devon, Edmonton (yes, inside the city), and Fort Saskatchewan.
  • Red Deer, Athabasca, McLeod, and Peace rivers also carry flour gold in their gravels.
  • Access from public riverbanks and bridge crossings is generally fine; crossing private land to reach the river needs the landowner's OK, and parks are off limits.

Places you can pan

Reserves, parks, river access and tourist pans. Each page carries the access notes and the source we used — read them before you drive.

Panning-area, claims, and regulation information on LocalKarat is general information for recreational prospectors — it is not legal advice. Mining, land-access, and environmental rules change and vary site by site. Verify current rules with the official sources linked on each page, get permission from private landowners and claim holders, and respect First Nations rights, settlement lands, and treaty areas.
