How the number is worked out
Value = weight in grams × purity × (spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768). Spot is the price of pure gold on the world market, quoted per troy ounce in US dollars and converted to CAD. Natural gold is never pure — it carries silver and a little copper — so the purity slider scales the pure-gold content. Placer gold from most Canadian creeks assays around 0.85–0.92 fine; the presets are starting points, not measurements.
Spot is not what you get paid
A refiner melts and assays the lot, deducts the non-gold content, and pays a percentage of the remainder — typically 75–95% of spot depending on the quantity, the fineness and the buyer. Small lots and unassayed gold sit at the low end. Nuggets with shape and character can go for more than melt value to collectors, which is a different market altogether. Get two quotes before you sell.

How much is a gram of placer gold worth?
Take the spot price per troy ounce, divide by 31.1035 for the price per gram of pure gold, then multiply by the purity of your gold. Placer (creek) gold is usually 0.85–0.92 fine, so a gram of placer gold is worth roughly 85–92% of a gram of pure gold at spot — and a buyer will pay a further discount on top of that.
What purity is placer gold?
Natural gold is an alloy, mostly with silver. Placer gold from most Canadian creeks runs about 0.85 to 0.92 fine (850–920 parts per thousand); some districts are known for higher or lower fineness. Only an assay tells you the real number — the slider here is an estimate.
Troy ounce or regular ounce?
Gold is always priced per troy ounce (31.1035 g), which is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce on a kitchen scale (28.35 g). Pennyweight (dwt, 1/20 troy oz = 1.5552 g) and grains (1/480 troy oz = 0.0648 g) are the other units you will see in old reports and on dealer sites.
What will a refiner or buyer actually pay?
Less than spot. Refiners assay the gold, deduct the non-gold content, then pay a percentage of the pure-gold value — commonly 75–95% depending on quantity, purity and who you sell to. Nuggets with character can sell above melt value to collectors. Get more than one quote.
