Is recreational panning legal here?
Yes — with hand tools, in the right places. Yukon welcomes recreational panning on
public land that is open to staking and not currently claimed. The territory's own advice: contact the
nearest Mining Recorder's office to confirm where panning is permitted before you go.
Huge stretches of the famous Klondike creeks are under active placer claims — a claim holder has
exclusive rights, so panning there needs their permission. First Nations settlement land likewise
requires permission from the First Nation.
Where you can go
Free Claim No. 6, Bonanza Creek — owned by the Klondike Visitors Association, about
18 km up Bonanza Creek Road from Dawson City, a short way upstream of the Discovery Claim that
started the 1896 rush. Panning is free and you keep what you find; loaner pans are available at the
Dawson Visitor Information Centre.
Commercial claim tours around Dawson — operators run paid pan-on-a-working-claim
experiences in season. Offerings change year to year, so check with the KVA or the visitor centre.
Unclaimed open public land — legal with hand tools once you've confirmed the
ground with the Mining Recorder.
